ONWARD

  • Mini-game focused on a quick, emotional experience told through level design and game mechanics

  • Built in Unreal 5.6 originally, now ported to 5.7

  • Solo developer project

I created this originally in response to a challenge I saw online - build something in Unreal that was very small and told an emotionally engaging story, but with these restrictions:

  • There should be little to no actual "story" content, e.g. no dialogue. Instead, the story should be told through mechanics and level design where possible.

  • From a technical standpoint, use no built-in movement components (e.g. don't use CharacterMovement or FloatingPawnMovement, it should be done manually)

  • Use no built-in gravity mechanics from Unreal. E.g. if your player is affected by gravity, you need to apply the downward force yourself.

I ultimately chose to do a platformer with a vibe and ability set vaguely reminiscent of Journey by thatgamecompany. That came with some interesting challenges. For example, this game has moving platforms, but without one of the movement components on the player character, you have to manually update the player to move with the platforms rather than Unreal taking care of it for you. (In my case, I did so by having the moving platforms detect when the player is on them and adding the platform's movement to the player character's).

Onward is available on Windows platforms.

RED LIGHT, GREEN LIGHT

  • Mini-game presenting a sci-fi setting for the classic game “Red Light, Green Light”

  • Built in Unity 6.2

  • Solo developer project

Red Light, Green Light is a quick mini-game I created in Unity in about a day-and-a-half. I hadn’t worked in Unity in a while and wanted a small project to refresh my skills.

The gameplay is simple - a menacing eye-like robot stares at you down a dark and menacing hall! When its light turns green, feel free to move. When the light turns red, stop moving! If you’re caught moving three times while the light is red, it’s game over. The player’s goal is to reach the robot without that happening.

I did everything in this game, from modeling the robot in Blender to voicing it.

Red Light, Green Light is available on Windows platforms.

DARK REFLECTIONS

  • Indie, narrative-driven platformer with a minimalist art style

  • Built in Unreal Engine 5

  • Solo developer project

  • NOTE - This project is on hold, and will be absorbed into Evil Pear Productions (my indie studio) in the future!

Dark Reflections (final title TBD) is a 3D, narrative-driven platformer featuring a variety of physics-based puzzles and player abilities and a minimalist art style.

The premise: Chris is a man going through something of a rough patch in his life - a divorce, a strained relationship with his daughter, and the memory of his deceased father haunting him. Everything is upended when he’s in a car crash, sending him into a coma. He awakens to find himself in a geometric virtual reality space, an experimental treatment to help him recover. Along the way, he’ll encounter a myriad of challenges to his healing - not only in the form of the various physical challenges presented in this space, but the memories of his toxic relationships as well.

Dark Reflection is currently being developed for Windows platforms. A prototype is available here, as well as a video of the two currently made levels. Note that there is currently no audio in the demo. This is a solo project, so I did everything you see here!
